ADVANCE ENGLISH I SWORD OF DAMOCLES

20th October 2022

After a long absence, Dr. Dawadi attended English class today. We discovered that he had been in an accident. We resumed class after hearing the entire story from Dr. Dawadi. Last week, Dr. Dawadi taught us a lesson: school is bad for children. Today, he taught us an ancient story, "The Sword of Damocles." As a part of our participation, Dr. Dawadi made us read the literature and analyze it.

The legend has it that Damocles, a courtier in the palace of Dionysius II, frequently bemoaned to his king Dionysius II his misfortune, which doomed him to a life of squalor and hardship. He often told King Dionysius that he was fortunate to have all the riches and comforts he desired. So, Dionysius II made Damocles an offer to trade roles for the day. However, Dionysius warned Damocles that the burden of being a king was so great that he must find a means to never lose sight of it. As a warning of the danger approaching him in the event that he made the incorrect choice, he had thus decided to have this sword hanging above his head. The phrase "the sword of Damocles" is used nowadays to indicate the unpredictability of life and the possibility of unexpected death.

In my opinion, the author is right. We all know that along with the wealth, luxury, and power that come with holding a high position, a person also faces several challenges and hazards throughout that time. Their opponents could seek to harm them, steal their wealth, bring about their demise, and take many more risks. The fact that King Dionysius placed a sword above the head of Damocles to symbolize these dangers makes complete sense. This perfectly illustrates the unpredictable nature of life and death. This literature reminds us that enormous power and significant responsibility often go hand in hand. In order to avoid ruining ourselves, we should never be overly conceited about our comforts. It is imperative to maintain a balance between our abilities and our responsibilities. The authority and influence that Damocles represents cannot be earned if we are unable to manage our obligations and the dangers that come with power.

If I had been the author, I too would have written the tale in the manner in which it is ideal for conveying a message to the reader. Nothing about it is lacking in any way. And it has been effective in conveying the concept that limitless wealth and power may not always lead to genuine pleasure and fulfillment. A high position might be honorable and glorious, but it can  also be dangerous.
