ADVANCE ENGLISH I BALLAD OF THE LANDLORD

Today ,

6th September 2022 , We were again divided into groups with our classmates today. . Eak Sir gave instruction in relation to the poem by Langston Hughes that we studied in class later on, "The Ballad of the Landlord." We were told to investigate the relationship between a tenant and a landlord, as well as the problems that may arise between them .Through the relationship of a black tenant and a white landlord, this poem depicts the inequality between the white and black races in the 1940s. He demonstrates how whites exploited blacks and failed to provide them with basic rights. Similarly, he depicts how the laws favor whites by stating how the black tenant was kept in detention.

I concur with the author's point of view as expressed in the poem. True, the white race brutally exploited and discriminated against the black race. He illustrates the social climate of the 1940s and the racial prejudice that prevailed at that time. There is no reason to deny that these events occurred, as the poet clearly demonstrated in many cases and through numerous examples. In this poem itself the landlord was not providing basic facilities such as proper housing even when the tenant's ceiling was leaking. This demonstrates how whites did not care about black's basic rights back then .

"The Ballad of the Landlord," a work of literature, teaches us that nothing in life is fair and that we must speak out against any discrimination that is committed against us. According to the poem, the tenant yelled at the landlord, symbolizing the blacks' protest against the whites. In a similar vein, the poem teaches us not to judge others based on their race, caste, origin, or any other factor. We must treat everyone with equality and respect.

The poem concludes by revealing that the black tenant was sentenced to 90 days in jail without bail. This demonstrated that black people were oppressed even when they raised their voices. If I were the poet, I would have ended the poem by demonstrating a successful outcome of the black tenant's protest, providing a ray of hope for the race. This could have implied that if we are truly opposed to something, we can undoubtedly overthrow it through perseverance and unity. This would have taught readers that the racial profiling and fraud are strictly prohibited by the law. But first and foremost, mindsets must change. Individuals should be able to see an individual beyond their skin color, caste and other aspects. Rental laws ought to be properly regulated and taught to everyone . Adding up people ought to start looking past the surface level.
